Holley was living a full and rich life in November 2021. She was the Communications Strategist for Duke Orthopaedics, managing ortho and the two PhD programs for physical and occupational therapy. She was a busy, committed, and active wife, community volunteer, and mother of four busy teenagers. In November 2021, she began experiencing limb weakness, muscle facilitations, and slurring of her words. After many tests, she was diagnosed with Bulbar ALS in July 2022.
Immediately following her diagnosis, Holley made an intentional decision to try to be in a positive place as much as possible in relation to her mental outlook. A firm believer in attitude makes a life, Holley has approached each day with gratitude and appreciation. She has become a mentor to other PALS and has participated in various ALS awareness events.
Although she has completely lost her ability to speak, Holley's strong voice is heard in her social media writings about living with ALS, her art, advocacy, and partnerships with local universities on giving agency to people living with ALS. She is a huge advocate for joy and tries to inspire others with her positive outlook despite fighting a devastating and terminal disease.
